HOTEL CALYSO in ITHACA, the homeland of king Odysseus

Ithaca, the renowned homeland of “the man of many devices”, king Odysseus, belongs to the Eptanese, and is situated in the south of Lefkas and the north-east of Kefalonia. Homer (see:Friends of Homer) has aptly referred to Ithaca as “sea-kissed”; for the coastline of Ithaca truly seems to have been moulded by the passionate kiss of the sea.

Despite taking up only 96 square kilometers, Ithaca opens up immense possibilities for entertainment to all kinds of visitors.

The beaches of Ithaca

The beaches of Ithaca, whose beauty has – fortunately! - remained unspoilt, and are at the disposal of those who are in quest of peace, and quiet and enjoy swimming in crystal clear sea waters. Certain beaches in Ithaca are accessible exclusively by boat. The numerous natural harbours of Ithaca, many of which resemble fjords, provide a secure haven for boats. It’s not accidental, then, that Ithaca is a popular destination with those that love sailing. Ithaca is also tremendously popular with those that love underwater fishing, water skiing and/or scuba diving.

The captivating picture of Ithaca is supplemented by the imposing presence of the lush green mountain that runs through the spine of the island. It is this very mountain that Homer has referred to as “forested Niritos”.

Activities at Ithaca

Visit the mountainous villages of Ithaca, admire the rare beauty of the landscape and let the magic of the sounds, the pictures and the scents fill your senses. Enjoy a refreshing walk in the beautiful walking tracks of Ithaca and admire the unique monuments of nature, such as, for instance, the menhirs in Anogi.

Archeological sights & Museums

Many of the monuments and sights of Ithaca are associated with the long history of the island as well as with the narrations of Homer. Interesting findings are on display at the archaeological museums of Vathy and Stavros. The Maritime & Folk Museum of Ithaca in Vathy is also very interesting.
